In a quiet alley, a nearly century-old wooden house has been renovated into an exhibition space. The sliding doors open to the sides, releasing the distinctive woody aroma that only a wooden house can possess into the air.

Live Coverage | Unveiling the Creative Vision

Never miss this rare opportunity — Team SO!Eyewear seized the moment to ask questions and had Mr. Satoshi Waki clear our doubts!

Q1.

Mr. Waki, it’s been a while!

Ever since the Tokyo 2024 SS exhibition (six months ago), everyone has been eagerly awaiting news from Taylor with Respect. The new autumn/winter collection is finally here! Could you please introduce the new products to us?

圖片

Waki:

Long time no see!

It’s great to be in Taiwan and meet everyone again. This is also a significant event as it marks Taylor with Respect’s first overseas exhibition!

In Japan, eyewear brands typically choose Tokyo as the city for their initial launch. This time, we are honored to have the opportunity to begin our journey in Tainan, the oldest city in Taiwan, thanks to the warm invitation we received.

We have always valued our Taiwanese customers and frequently receive feedback from them. For this new collection, we’ve incorporated feedback from both Japanese and Taiwanese consumers, adjusting the sizes to better meet everyone’s needs.

圖片

Waki:

This collection features four new styles: SlickDudeNimbus, and Contour.

Slick and Dude are our first-ever pilot frames. Nimbus is a new addition to the Cloud Series, which received an enthusiastic response in 2023 SS. Lastly, Contour is a new model that combines and enhances the best features of our popular designs.

As fellow Asians, Taiwanese and Japanese people share similar head shapes and facial features, and recently there has been a growing demand for larger frames in Japan as well.

This new collection is dedicated to our loyal customers in Japan and Taiwan who have always supported Taylor with RespectWe hope everyone will love it!

Q2.

We noticed that two of the new models, Slick and Dude, both feature a pilot frame design. Was there any special inspiration or story behind this design?

圖片

Waki:

Slick is designed to fit the face just right — not too big or too small. It features a Boston frame design, which is more rounded in shape. Dude, on the other hand, is larger, with a rugged and stylish look, featuring a square frame design that combines a retro yet trendy aesthetic.

These two frames, one large and one small, one square and one round, were created after numerous adjustments, with the aim of satisfying all customers who love vintage frames.

圖片

Waki:

The design process was a lot of fun! I spent a long time brainstorming and wanted to incorporate elements that I personally enjoy, which led to many revisions.

This new model was created as a tribute to one of my favorite comedy movies, “The Big Lebowski”. In this 1998 film, the protagonist is nicknamed ‘Dude’.

To capture the vintage feel with a touch of modernity of the film, I blended the characteristics of the two main characters to create the Dude frame.

Q3.

It’s really fascinating to hear the creator share the stories behind the designs. Did any new techniques go into the making of these four new models?

圖片

Waki:

This time, we used a traditional Japanese forging technique called “Swagging”. This method is typically used for crafting precious metal items like gold and silver.

Just like Taylor with Respect’s previous Graduation Metal Plating and Damaged Metal Plating series, this can be considered a world-first.

No one has ever applied this kind of skill to eyewear before. We are constantly striving to create surface treatments that no one else has done before, with the aim of becoming the best in the world.

圖片

Waki:

This time, we achieved a unique combination of surface treatment and color, resulting in the new “Swagging Style” model.

The factory manager, with whom we have been collaborating for a long time, is a highly experienced technician with 40 years of experience in the eyewear industry. This was the first time he had seen such a special process. When it was completed, he was so excited that he called me and said, We did it!

His joyful tone and excitement were truly touching.

圖片

Waki:

We aim to find a better value. We are always searching to produce eyewear with high quality. We search for quality, function, and beauty at a high level. To accomplish this goal, it is important to keep the balance of three elements.

Even though other brands start to imitate us every time we release a new product, we are not worried at all because we know that our commitment to perfection is what sets Taylor with Respect apart.

Q4.

We’ve heard that Taylor with Respect will be participating in the SILMO eyewear exhibition in France this September. As everyone knows, SILMO is like the Oscars of the eyewear industry. Not only do invited brands get the chance to showcase their work internationally, but the event also announces the latest award-winning designs. This is your first time participating in such a major international event. How are you feeling right now?

圖片

Waki:

Rather than feeling nervous, I’m more excited. Over the past few years, Taylor with Respect has gradually made a name for itself in Asia through remarkable designs and innovative techniques. I’m really looking forward to introducing Taylor with Respect to the world through this opportunity.

I believe this journey will be very rewarding—not only will we get to meet more consumers, but we’ll also have the chance to see and learn from a variety of new people and things, sparking further inspiration.

Q5.

Looking ahead, what plans and vision do you have for Taylor with Respect? Since Taiwan was chosen as the first stop for the Taylor with Respect exhibition, are you considering holding product showcases in other countries in the future?

圖片

Waki:

Compared to high-end European brands or well-established Japanese ones, Taylor with Respect is still a relatively young brand. My goal is to build a solid foundation for the brand, so that it can thrive and have a long-lasting future. Although I don’t yet know who will take over in the future, my hope is to shape Taylor with Respect into a brand known for its steady development and ever-improving handcrafted frames.

圖片

Waki:

Thanks to this valuable experience, I’m also considering future launches in other overseas cities, such as Hong Kong.

About the ExhibitionArt De Corner and STUST Exhibition

圖片

In the bustling city center, the exhibition space “Art De Corner” quietly resides in a peaceful alleyway, so subtle that one might easily miss it.

圖片

Art De Corner, a small corner in a nearly century-old house, is now a venue for exhibitions, lectures, and courses. With the goal of “creating simple and unpretentious value and a comfortable space for the mind and body”, it opened in June 2022 and has since become an art and culture sharing space, soon to be designated a historical landmark.

圖片

While Taylor with Respect’s exhibition is being held, the same space is also hosting an art exhibition from “STUST” (Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology). The exhibition focuses on the theme of environmental sustainability, advocating for the discovery and use of sustainable resources. In response to global energy issues, they introduced “Stone Paper / Rock Paper”, a new, recyclable, and scalable energy source that also presents a business opportunity.

The enthusiastic students and teachers who aim to contribute to the world have used Stone Paper to decorate this small corner into a trendy exhibition space. Their life proposals, featuring innovative applications of materials from everyday items to pet supplies, provide fresh, creative ideas that leave a lasting impression. It’s a truly delightful and interesting exhibit.

A Brief Introduction of Taylor with Respect

圖片

Rising swiftly as a dark horse, Taylor with Respect celebrates its 7th anniversary this year. Since its inception, the brand has been committed to producing high-quality titanium frames and hybrid frames that combine titanium with acetate.

The brand’s founder and designer, Mr. Waki, was formerly one of the designers for a renowned Japanese eyewear brand. The brand name Taylor with Respect is a tribute to his grandfather, who was a tailor. As a tailor, Mr. Waki’s grandfather was incredibly dedicated, always striving to complete each task to perfection with impeccable craftsmanship.

This dedication left a profound impact on Mr. Waki, who believes that just as people tailor their clothes to fit their bodies, they should also have custom-made frames for their faces. Thus, “Taylor with Respect” was born.

Upholding the spirit of “仕立て” (tailoring), the brand emphasizes three core values: “Beauty, “Quality, and “Function. Each frame is crafted with meticulous attention, reflecting the artisan spirit of Japan, where no detail is sacrificed.
